My Top 10 Favorite Retro Songs!!! 90’s and before

The Lost Soul is back with another lost post. Well, not so lost but you might feel lost in the world of music/songs while reading it.
Songs and Music plays an important role in our lives. Whether we are aware of it or not but music is an integral part of who we are. We listen to music when we are sad, we dance to music when we are happy, we listen to music when we want to forget the world, and we listen to music to remember who we are… So, music fills us and our lives without our knowledge.
Here is a not so comprehensive list of the kind of music/songs that I listen to and consider to be my favorites over the years. Read on…
Song: Yeh Raaten Yeh Mausam (Dilli Ka Thug)
Singer/s: Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle
Year: 1958
Why I Love it: I fell in love with the lyrics and the feel of this song. The B&W effect combined with the bubbly beauty Nutan made the song timeless. It is my “go to” song whenever insomnia strikes me. (FYI – I’m a Nocturnal creature)
Song: Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai (Kati Patang)
Singer/s: Kishore Kumar
Year: 1971
Why I Love it: I love this song for multiple reasons. See below:
  • It stars my BFF’s favorite actor (Rajesh Khanna).
  • It has been part of every single person’s playlist once upon a time.
  • This was our friendship anthem during our college days. [Our = Me and Chaotic Soulzzz]
  • This song hits your at the right spot if you’re going through a low phase in your love life.
The music of this song is by legendary R. D. Burman – Class never goes out of style. Same was with this man. He had more hits to his credit than the number of years I’ve been on this planet… Yeah…go on…start guessing my age… Good luck with that! LOL!!!
Song: Chithi Na Koi Sandes (Dushman)
Singer/s: Lata Mangeshkar and Jagjit Singh
Year: 1998
Why I Love it: If this song doesn’t make you shed tears than nothing ever will. Not trying to exaggerate anything here but I being a tough task also happen to get emotional listening to this song. If you’re missing someone OR just having a bad day – DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS SONG because it’ll make things 10 times sadder for you. This song has the capability to make you sad even when you’re not sad in fact. But then many of you will ask me, if this song is so sad then why I love it??? Exactly for the same reason, that it is sad. It keeps me grounded and keeps on realizing me that no one is going to be with me forever. And that helps me in living life and loving my peeps more every day.
We (Me and ChaoticSoulzz) had also made a divider on our college bench similar to the one that they show in the movie/song. We’re just too cute… I know 🙂
Song: Tujhe Dekha Toh Ye Jana Sanam (DDLJ)
Singer/s: Udit Narayan and Lata Mangeshkar
Year: 1998
Why I Love it: SRK and Kajol together is the epitome of Love (Reel) and friendship (Real). SRK being my Bff’s favorite and Kajol is mine (Love Love Love her). The charm of SRK and the innocence of Kajol mixed with the picturesque location used during the song just make this one an all time desired song for the lovers.

Song: Meri Soni Meri Tamanna (The Days Are Dark Mix)
Singer/s: Shaan
Year: 1973 (Original Version)
Why I Love it: Well, yeah, I know I did li’l bit of cheating here but you have to listen to this version of the song at least once and then you’ll know why. The lyrics of the song (original) are very sensual and romantic. I also love this version of the song because of the English lyrics which are been mixed into it. And how can I not mention the super sweet and melodious voice of Shaan. Being Bong!!!
Song: Hai Rama Ye Kya Hua (Rangeela)
Singer/s: Hariharan and Swarnalatha
Year: 1995
Why I Love it: SENSUAL is the word for this particular song. From the song itself to the music, from the directing to the acting and the actors, everything screams sensual tension. And when I listen to it I start to lose my mind over it. It just takes me to a different world altogether. A world of romance where everything is utterly sensual and arousing…LOL!
Disclaimer – Issued in Public interest – Please DO NOT listen to this song if you’re single. You’ll regret it. Trust me! (Pun intended)
Song: Kehna Hi Kya (Bombay)
Singer/s: K S Chithra
Year: 1995
Why I Love it: The one thing I like the most about this song is the south Indian accent that the singer has. It just makes this song very unique. I can relate to this song because I’ve been a shy girl once upon a time and I exactly know how it feels when you fall a guy but you’re too shy to talk about it. This song expresses that feeling very well. It expresses the pain and plight (in a good way) of a love struck girl amazingly. Love listening to it whenever I wanna reminisce about those early teen days.
Song: Aye Zindagi Gale Laga Le (Sadma)
Singer/s: Suresh Wadkar
Year: 1983
Why I Love it: Just the mention of this song is enough to give me Goosebumps. Lyrics hit you hard right on the spots. The innocence of this song is what makes it relatable and hard hitting. When the going get hard, just sit down with your earphones and listen to this one. It won’t cheer you up but it’ll help you see things in better light knowing that you’re not alone in this plight, there are many just like you who have questions from life about life.
Song: Naa Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai (Chalbaaz)
Singer/s: Amit Kumar and Kavita Krishnamurthy
Year: 1989
Why I Love it: Well, this is one song that I can listen to and instantly my mood is lifted and I start dancing. This peppy number is good for people rather girls like me who love themselves to the core. (If you don’t yet love yourself, I have one question for you… What the hell is wrong with you??? Love Yourself you crazy people!!!
Song: Kaate Nahi Katate ye Din ye Raat (Mr. India)
Singer/s: Alisha Chinai and Kishore Kumar
Year: 1987
Why I Love it: Example of how to stay classy while being sensuous. This song from the cult movie Mr. India just teaches you how to be secret lover and be in your limits while being equally romantic. Kishore Kumar’s serene voice just adds to the feel of this song. And who can forget Sridevi’s blue saari that hugged her body more than the skin, if you know what I mean. (wink wink)
So that was my list of songs that acts as my shield when I feel like cutting myself off from the chaos around me.
