Beauty with Brains: The Modern Indian Women

It is certainly not about which brand she is wearing or what make up she is using. It is also not about how many degrees she holds from the top most universities. It’s not about her profession, not about her character. It is simply about HER!

It’s about the struggle in her mind. It’s about the struggle she has to do every day to get that position. It’s about how hard she strives and achieves what she is, where she is. No matter how many hours she has to work in the office but still she has to come home and cook for her children or her husband or her parents. She is the one who sacrifices every single thing for her loved ones. She is the one who has that dream in her eyes. She is the one who knows what she is doing. She is cute, confused and childish as well as firm, focused and mature when she has to. She knows the technology but hardly uses it. She loves to listen to the music, let that be any kind.

So are the above mentioned things ringing some bells? Yeah! You are absolutely right. This is the Modern Indian Women. It is about you, me and many more Indian women who are modern in their own ways. Some of us look pretty in saris while some look gorgeous in a mini skirt. Everything we wear on our body has the elegance because of our modernism. Not necessarily, all of us know the global language, English. But even in our regional language we have that dignity to fight. Yes the modern Indian women fights her soul out.

 

She fights with the producer of her movie on her fees, she fights with her husband who doesn’t gives the time she needs. She fights with her friends on silly reasons; she fights with the vegetable vendor for some free kaddipatta. She fights for the door in the local trains and also fights for her children with the teacher. She fights with the professor to know why is her marks deducted, she fights with her parents to study the course she wants to study. Yes the Modern Indian Women fights for her rights. She knows her rights.

Being modern isn’t about speaking fluent English or wearing Chanel for every party. She more or less about knows her rights, raising her voice and enjoying life.

 

I see a modern woman everyday in my house, she is my mom. She is beautiful, well educated, emotional, strong headed and hard working. She is proud of the fact that she is a single working mom. She loves her children. She works from 9 to 5 and then comes home and cooks food. She struggles in the local train everyday and fights for the door. She loves window shopping. The best part about her is, though she is an arts graduate, she makes the perfect budget every month. Now this is one of the examples of Modern Indian Women for me.

One of the modern women I know is the one who is always supporting me and also criticizing me – My friend Shrabani Kolay. She is the typical young modern Indian damsel, who started working for a BPO because; she thought it’s her dream job. She completed her graduation in commerce, with no idea of the future. She loves her friends and is on the cell phone all the time. She loves the typical love stories but is scared of falling in love. She is modern enough to fight with her family for her friends. She accepts the fact that she is lazy and she is proud of it. She has changed in the last 7 years just to prove to someone that she is hotter than any other skinny girl. She is my next Modern Indian Woman.

My grandmother, who says grannies can’t be modern? My grandma is. I call her Thamma (duh! I am Bengali! Thamma means Grandma in Bengali). Though at the moment she has this major memory loss, but there was a time when she defined the exact definition of Modern Indian Woman. When a relative said, ‘your grand daughters are quite big now and pretty too ask them to get married’. She retaliated saying, ‘they have to make their careers. Girls in our family don’t get married unless they are independent.’ Now that is modern for me. She is modern for me.

The list of Modern Indian Women is the never ending one for me. Today this is what we are well known for, Modern Indian Women. Wrong is the person who says: beauty and brains can’t go hand in hand.
